On a hot summer day in 1961, David Attenborough, filming "Zoo Quest," received some enormous eggshell fragments from a local boy in Madagascar. These fragments were discovered by the boy on a sand-covered riverbed and belonged to the world's largest bird—the now-extinct elephant bird, weighing half a ton. Since David completed "Zoo Quest" in Madagascar, the place has changed dramatically: 80% of the rainforest has been destroyed, while the population has quadrupled, and over 50 species of mammals unique to the area are struggling on the brink of extinction. Can Attenborough's precious eggshell fragments explain the mystery of the ancient elephant bird's disappearance? Can we learn from the fate of the elephant bird how to save Madagascar's wildlife?
