In Guangzhou during the 1940s, Li Biao, the bodyguard of gang leader Lao Jia Qi, hurriedly returned from Hong Kong carrying a rattan box. At the same time, young Hong Weihua, a university graduate, arrived in Guangzhou to seek a living, also carrying a rattan box. As he was unfamiliar with the area, Hong Weihua decided to find his classmate Liang Zhanpeng first. While he was inquiring with an old man selling cigarettes, he suddenly heard a woman shout for help. He set down his rattan box and chased after a thief who was stealing a wallet. The rickshaw that Li Biao was riding stopped in front of the cigarette stall. He put down his rattan box to buy cigarettes. As the thief fled from Hong Weihua, he knocked over the cigarette stall, causing Li Biao to angrily pick up his rattan box and leave. After helping the young lady retrieve her wallet, Hong Weihua remembered that his box was still in front of the cigarette stall. He finally found Liang Zhanpeng and was invited to stay at his home. In the evening, he opened the box and was surprised to find it filled with foreign cigarettes instead of his clothes. When he curiously opened a pack, several small plastic bags containing drugs fell out. Lao Jia Qi, upon discovering that the cigarettes in his rattan box had disappeared, believed that Li Biao had dared to play tricks on him, and ordered his subordinate Bai Jinlong to beat Li Biao. Terrified, Li Biao, pale with fear, desperately denied it and suddenly remembered that he might have grabbed the wrong box after being knocked over at the cigarette stall. He and Bai Jinlong went to Liang Zhanpeng's house with the letters from Hong Weihua's box, but only found the empty box, as the drugs had already been taken by Liang Zhanpeng, resulting in Liang's father being brutally killed. Grief-stricken, Liang Zhanpeng decided to use drugs as bait to take revenge for his father's death, but fell into Bai Jinlong's trap and was severely injured, jumping into the Pearl River. Hong Weihua, who had already left Liang's house, knew nothing about it and happened to encounter the young lady he helped before — Kong Lishan, the daughter of wealthy businessman Kong Shounian. While they were chatting, Bai Jinlong pursued them, forcing them to flee in panic. Lao Jia Qi demanded money from the Kong family, and Kong's father severely reprimanded Kong Lishan. Hong Weihua learned everything from Liang Zhanpeng's sister and regretted that he had caused Liang's family to be destroyed because of him. Under Kong Lishan's guidance, he stealthily entered Lao Jia Qi's house through the back door to settle accounts, but was outnumbered and beaten badly. In a critical moment, he was rescued by Kong Lishan. Bai Jinlong betrayed Lao Jia Qi and kidnapped Kong Lishan to extort money from the Kong family. Lao Jia Qi brought people to fight with Bai Jinlong and died under Bai Jinlong's hidden weapon. After rescuing Kong Lishan, Hong Weihua encountered Bai Jinlong. Liang Zhanpeng appeared, pulling the pin on a grenade to take revenge for his father's murder, and perished alongside Bai Jinlong.
