Content description: During a coup in the Soviet Union, rebels take control of a nuclear missile base and threaten to attack the United States. The U.S. government urgently orders the USS Alabama nuclear submarine to prepare for a counterattack, but at the critical moment when a decision to launch an attack is needed, the submarine's communication system fails, making it impossible to verify the authenticity of the attack order. The submarine commander, played by Hackman, decides to launch, but the newly appointed officer Washington believes the situation is too serious and insists on confirming the message first, going so far as to instigate a mutiny to imprison his superior.
