After that, he changed his name and left home, going to work in France. After World War I, Chen Zhen, under the alias Qi Tianyuan, returned to his long-lost homeland and met Shanghai tycoon Liu Yutian (played by Anthony Wong) and the seductive nightclub hostess KIKI (played by Shu Qi). Liu is arrogant and makes a fortune from war, yet still retains the spirit of a Chinese person; KIKI appears innocent but is actually a Japanese female spy, deeply embedded in the nightclub to gather intelligence. Although World War I has ended, the shadow of war still looms large. Chen Zhen joins a clandestine anti-Japanese organization, hoping to gain Liu Yutian’s support. Meanwhile, an assassination squad led by Colonel Rishi Takeshi (played by Ryu Kohata) begins to target patriotic individuals ruthlessly.
