Thief Miles (Martin Lawrence) collaborates with three accomplices to steal diamonds, but one of them, Dirk, betrays them, leading to police involvement. With nowhere to turn, Miles hides the diamonds in the ventilation ducts of an unfinished building and is soon captured. Two years later, Miles is released from prison, but everything outside has changed; his girlfriend no longer needs him, and the building where he hid the diamonds has turned into— a police station! To retrieve the diamonds, Miles steals an ID card and disguises himself as a police officer using forged documents. Due to a shortage of personnel, the fake officer Miles is quickly assigned a role and pairs up with rookie cop Carson (Luke Wilson). Utilizing his thieving experience, Miles soon excels in the police department, while the diamonds in the ducts go missing after being washed, forcing Miles to maintain his charade. Shortly after, Dirk reappears to get his hands on Miles' diamonds...
