The story takes place in Hebei during the early years of the Republic of China. A young man (played by Wang Dao) reluctantly leaves his newlywed wife (played by Zhang Aijia) just after their marriage and ventures alone to Sunjiatai in Northeast China for work. Two years pass in the blink of an eye. After two years, the young man returns to be with his wife, and they settle down in a thatched cottage. However, their happy life does not last long, as the young man is beaten and severely injured, leaving him bedridden. Their family's source of income suddenly vanishes, and in desperation, he is forced to pawn his wife to a brothel, hoping to recover quickly and redeem her from that hellish place. Although the young man regains his ability to work, he despairs over how slowly he makes money and places all his hopes on gambling, which naturally leads to his downfall. Eventually, when a patrol officer desires the young man's wife and wishes to take her as a concubine, the young man reluctantly agrees.
