In the late 1980s, in a certain city in Jiangnan. The director of the drama troupe, Meng Tao (played by Lin Jifan), is a college classmate of the new mayor, Gao Feng (played by Wang Zhihua). Upon hearing that someone has given a jade carving as a gift to his foreign businessman friend, Mayor Gao entrusts Meng Tao to investigate the matter at the grassroots level and to gather inspiration for his work. Meng Tao's experience in gathering inspiration is a thrilling series of ups and downs. First, he suffers from diarrhea after drinking a can of beverage that had cockroaches in it, and He Yiming (played by Tong Ruixin) takes him to the hospital, where a careless nurse gives him the wrong medication, nearly costing him his life. Then, he is pushed onto the operating table, almost becoming a subject for dissection.
