Based on Isabel Allende's novel "The House of the Spirits." To be with his beloved Rosa, young Esteban (played by Jeremy Irons) leaves the capital and heads alone to the wilds to mine gold. Two years later, he successfully strikes "the first bucket of gold," but at that moment, he receives the tragic news that his beloved Rosa has accidentally ingested poison and died. Heartbroken, Esteban returns to his hometown to take over the farm left by his father. Under Esteban's meticulous management, the farm thrives, and he becomes a renowned landowner. A few years later, Esteban encounters Clara (played by Meryl Streep), who is Rosa's younger sister. Clara has secretly loved Esteban since childhood, and now she has blossomed into a beautiful woman. The two quickly fall in love and soon marry. Clara gives birth to a daughter, Blanca, and the family enjoys a harmonious life together. However, as Esteban's power grows, he becomes increasingly authoritarian and capricious. He baselessly suspects his sister Ferula (played by Glenn Close) of having ill intentions toward Clara and drives her out of the house. He also disapproves of Blanca's (played by Winona Ryder) relationship with the farmworker Pedro (played by Antonio Banderas) and forcibly separates them. The relationships between husband and wife, father and daughter, begin to crack, and the entire family is on the verge of collapse. Soon, with the turmoil of the times, Esteban's family's fate is caught in the whirlpool of history...
