This film is based on the bestselling novel by Tom Clancy. In November 1984, the Soviet Union was on the cusp of Gorbachev's rise to power, during the height of the Cold War between the U.S. and the Soviet Union. The Soviets had developed a new nuclear submarine named "Red October" and assigned the experienced Captain Ramius to conduct its first trial run. At this time, the CIA had also obtained intelligence about the "Red October". During the journey, Captain Ramius killed the overbearing political officer who discovered his intentions and ordered the submarine to change its course. He claimed to all crew members that this maneuver was to utilize the submarine's advanced silent propulsion system to pass through the U.S. Navy's surveillance network and explore the American coastline freely. A high-ranking Soviet general secretly took aboard a super military submarine called "Red October", but was he trying to defect to the U.S. or incite a nuclear war?
