The story takes place in 1930s Shanghai, where Gu Weibang (Yang Youning) is an unknown small director. By chance, he meets a female star named Meng Sifan (Ruby Lin), and the two hit it off, deciding to make a romantic thriller, which Gu Weibang titles "Midnight Song." Everything proceeds smoothly, with actors joining the crew and waiting for filming to begin. Gu Weibang chooses the Li Palace Cinema as the shooting location, despite many warnings that strange supernatural events had occurred there in the past and it was not suitable for a long stay. Stubbornly, Gu Weibang ignores the advice. Sure enough, it isn't long before the crew experiences a series of bizarre incidents, and it isn't until the actor playing the male lead dies mysteriously that everyone realizes how serious the situation has become. Gu Weibang's fiancée, Mai Lisi (Huang Huan), comes to the crew to investigate the truth behind the events, which leads to the uncovering of a long-buried story between Gu Weibang and Meng Sifan.
