The story takes place on a luxury cruise ship named "Poseidon." In the brilliantly lit hall, elegantly dressed passengers eagerly await the arrival of the New Year. An earthquake suddenly plunges them from paradise to hell as the Poseidon is capsized by massive waves, leading to chaos and screams within the ship. Ignoring the captain's protests, Scott (played by Gene Hackman) leads eight passengers in a desperate climb to higher ground. Just as they establish a foothold, a flood strikes, and within moments, they become the only nine survivors on the Poseidon. Scott guides the group in forging an escape route, slowly making their way toward safety amidst looming danger and erupting conflicts. An explosion seals off the only escape route available to Scott and his group. Faced with despair and death, can they cling to their slim hope?
