Norwegian performance artist Morten Traavik makes his feature film directorial debut with the documentary "Liberation Day," produced over the course of a year. The film chronicles Laibach, a band that describes itself as the most misunderstood, visiting the most misunderstood regime for an unprecedented cultural exchange. To celebrate the 70th anniversary of the victory over fascism in 2015, the North Korean government invited the industrial music group Laibach from Slovenia to perform in the capital, Pyongyang, in a groundbreaking move during the Liberation Day celebrations. This historic performance, given special permission to take place in North Korea, featured the band playing classic tracks and covering songs by The Beatles and the theme from "The Sound of Music." Known for their rebellious style and unique blend of humor and sarcasm, Laibach adapted to local customs by wearing North Korean national attire and performed "Arirang" alongside a North Korean pianist. The entire show unfolded in a subtly peculiar, absurd, and high-contrast cultural atmosphere, filled with surprising moments that left a lasting impact and unveiled the rarely seen mystery of North Korea.
