During the late Tokugawa shogunate, a low-ranking samurai from the Haisaka clan, Katagiri Munemitsu (played by Masatoshi Nagase), lives a simple but content life with his mother (played by Chieko Baishō), younger sister Shino (played by Tomoko Tabata), and maid Kiho (played by Takako Matsu). After the death of his mother, his sister marries Munemitsu's friend Shimada Samon (played by Hidetaka Yoshioka), while Kiho suffers from a troublesome in-law family. One day, Munemitsu unexpectedly reunites with Kiho on the street. Upon learning of her suffering at the hands of her in-laws, he is furious and takes her home to care for her during her recovery. Munemitsu’s long-buried feelings for Kiho are rekindled, but he hesitates to express his true feelings due to various concerns. Eventually, Kiho returns home, leaving Munemitsu behind. Meanwhile, Munemitsu’s martial arts comrade and friend, Hazama Yaichirō (played by Seiyō Uchino), is arrested after plotting a secret rebellion but escapes from prison. Munemitsu is ordered to pursue him. Armed with his unique secret technique, the Hidden Sword Demon Claw, Munemitsu prepares for a life-and-death battle with Yaichirō.
