In 1944, Rome, the streets are scarred and occupied by the Nazis. The German army is ruthlessly hunting down the guerrillas defending their homeland. The leader of the Italian underground resistance, engineer Giorgio Manfredi (played by Marcello Pagliero), is being pursued by the German troops. In a critical moment, Manfredi flees to the home of his friend Francesco for refuge. With the help of Francesco's fiancée, Pina (played by Anna Magnani), Manfredi meets Father Don Pietro (played by Aldo Fabrizi) and asks him to deliver a large sum of money to the guerrillas. Francesco is captured while trying to protect Manfredi, and Pina is shot dead. However, after narrowly escaping, Manfredi is betrayed by his girlfriend, and he and the priest are arrested and imprisoned. The Nazis deliberately torture Manfredi severely in front of the priest, and they ultimately sacrifice themselves heroically under the enemy's brutal treatment and gunfire. This film is adapted from the original work by Sergio Amidei.
