The story takes place in the era of martial arts. Orphan Ah Fei (played by Andy Lau) is said to have been raised by schools of fish since childhood, thus possessing extraordinary skills. However, Ah Fei is not interested in fame and fortune, living a carefree life in a fishing village. By chance, Ah Fei meets Yan Shisan (played by Eric Tsang), a remnant of the previous dynasty, and they become best friends in two days. To help Yan Shisan reclaim the throne from the Fourteenth Prince along with the King of Lanling, Ah Fei goes to Lanling and rescues the King and his daughter, Yue'er (played by Anita Mui). During their escape, Ah Fei and Yue'er develop feelings for each other, but Yue'er is already betrothed to Yan Shisan, forcing Ah Fei to leave them sadly. While Ah Fei is away, the Fourteenth Prince dispatches troops to besiege Yan Shisan and the others, putting them in grave danger.
