Ernest (Michael Shannon) lives a dependent life with his son Jerome (Kodi Smit-McPhee) and daughter Marlee (Elle Fanning). Although they face financial difficulties and a hard life, the family remains tightly connected, supporting and encouraging each other. Ernest uses the last bit of money to buy a broken machine mule, which he and Jerome use to transport food for miners working in the mountains, earning a living. This worn-out mule represents the family’s last hope. Phileum (Nicholas Hoult) has always regarded Ernest's family as a thorn in his side, simply because the land they currently occupy once belonged to his father. This time, Phileum sets his sights for revenge on the isolated Marlee.
