The film is based on a true story, where a journalist from a small town, Adam (played by John Krasinski), and a Greenpeace volunteer, Rachel (played by Drew Barrymore), join the effort to save the gray whales in the Arctic Circle. The two must unite with the Inuit people of Alaska to confront the opposition from oil companies as well as the military forces of the Soviet Union and the United States. Against the backdrop of the Cold War, they ultimately gain the world's attention, and the shadow of the Cold War is alleviated by the mission to save this endangered species.
