Melanie (Michelle Pfeiffer) is a single mother, struggling to find balance between work and her son, which causes her a lot of stress. Jack (George Clooney) is a columnist, and the sudden arrival of his daughter leaves this new father feeling overwhelmed. A school field trip saves both adults from their predicaments; free from the constraints of their children, Melanie can finally focus entirely on her big client, while Jack can concentrate on covering the news about the mayoral campaign. Unfortunately, things don't go as planned when both children miss the ferry for the field trip, meaning the responsibility of caring for the kids falls entirely on the parents during these important days. In the chaos, Melanie and Jack mistakenly take each other's phones, leading to a slew of frustrating troubles, but at the same time, a wonderful romance begins to unfold.
