Callum Lynch (played by Michael Fassbender) wakes up just before his execution and discovers that he has been chosen by Sofia (played by Marion Cotillard) to participate in a program that aims to rid humanity of violent impulses. The virtual reality machine Animus allows users to experience the memories of their ancestors, and once strapped into the machine, Callum realizes he is a descendant of the assassin Aguilar, who lived during the Spanish Inquisition. They are searching for the Apple of Eden, which can control free will. Sofia, reluctantly manipulating Callum under pressure from her father Alan (played by Jeremy Irons), sends him back to the past to locate the modern whereabouts of the Apple of Eden, threatening his physical and psychological health. However, after the assassin companion Moussa (played by Michael K. Williams) suggests to Callum that Alan may have ulterior motives, Callum begins to reconsider his actions and motives, and the fate of human free will hangs in the balance...
