After a group of bandits rob a gold transport carriage, their leader Ben Wade (played by Glenn Ford) is captured carelessly in a small town. The town's sheriff doesn’t stay happy for long, as successfully bringing Wade to trial becomes a very tricky problem. Dan Evans (played by Van Heflin), a farmer facing an economic crisis, joins the escort team for a substantial commission. While waiting for the 3:10 train to Yuma, the escort team faces life-or-death threats from Wade's gang, and Wade offers Dan a better deal. Faced with money, life, and ethics, what choice will he ultimately make? How will the escort journey end?
