The story tells of the Jin army's iron hooves trampling the Central Plains. Zhi Xing loses his parents in the war and becomes an orphan, saved by a wandering monk who brings him to the Baoguo Temple. Zhi Xing enters the temple, shaves his head to become a monk, and takes the Dharma name "Austere Monk." Under the care of Master Jueyuan, he masters exceptional martial arts skills. However, the monks who uphold the temple's precepts view him as an abomination and do not allow him into the Arhat Hall. Left with no choice, Zhi Xing bids farewell to the monks and retreats to the mountains, living among monkeys and eagles. He forages for herbs on cliffs with shackles and practices diligently for years, honing a remarkable set of skills. As national calamity looms and the Jin army invades the Central Plains, bringing suffering to the people, Zhi Xing steps forward to drive them away when they insult and kill the monks in the temple, but is punished by the precept monks for violating their rules. Zhi Xing confronts the precept monks in a fierce battle at the cliff's edge. After several rounds, he accidentally slips and falls into the abyss. The precept monks believe he is surely dead. Unexpectedly, Zhi Xing survives against the odds and is rescued by Uncle Li from Li Family Village, receiving careful attention from the beautiful Zhao Xiang, who has disguised herself as a man and previously saved him multiple times. When Jin spies led by Shi Zha discover that Zhi Xing is recovering at Uncle Li's home, they bring the Jin army to slaughter Li Family Village. Zhao Xiang and Zhi Xing use a strategy to lure the enemy deeper and lead the militias to lay an ambush outside the village, successfully repelling the Jin army and eliminating Shi Zha. The militias continue their victorious pursuit, driving the Jin army besieging Baoguo Temple down the mountain and rescuing the monks and the people within, restoring peace to Baoguo Temple.
