In the distant future, humanity leaves an overburdened Earth and continues its civilization in new star systems. The planets in the center of these systems form a union, constantly trying to incorporate remote, wild planets into their sphere of influence. A girl named River (Summer Glau) is transformed into a highly sensitive and agile fighting machine under this policy of the alliance.
