The masked hero Zorro (Anthony Hopkins) suddenly descends from the skies to stop the Spanish governor Montero from slaughtering innocents, rescuing a prisoner destined for execution and thereby earning a deep-seated enmity with Montero. Subsequently, Montero sends his troops to track Zorro. In the midst of the chaos, Zorro's wife is killed, and his infant daughter is cruelly taken away, while Zorro himself is imprisoned. Twenty years pass in the blink of an eye, and in order to ensure his legacy, Zorro escapes from prison wearing his mask. Montero continues his evil deeds, planning to purchase the rights to California. Zorro finds a young thief named Alejandro (Antonio Banderas) and imparts all his knowledge to him, hoping Alejandro can thwart Montero's scheme. Alejandro inherits Zorro's mask, but when he confronts Montero, he discovers that the fierce Spanish princess (Catherine Zeta-Jones) standing in his way is actually the daughter of the old Zorro!
