During the Anti-Japanese War, in Longmen Village of the North China base area, there were a father and son with the surname Zhao. The father (Shu Shi) was the captain of the militia squad, and his 12-year-old son Hai Wa (Cai Yuan Yuan) was the leader of the children's group. One day, Father Zhao asked Hai Wa to deliver a feather letter to the Eighth Route Army regarding an attack on the Japanese artillery tower. Hai Wa disguised himself as a shepherd boy, herding a flock of sheep while carrying the letter on his journey. On the way, Hai Wa encountered the enemy and cleverly hid the letter under the tail of a sheep, escaping a disaster. Forced to lead the way, he took the chance to grab the letter back while the enemy was asleep at night and fled, during which the letter was lost and regained several times. Hai Wa also fell into the hands of the enemy again, but this time, the clever and brave boy led the enemy down the wrong path. When the enemy realized they had been tricked, they injured Hai Wa's hand, just as the Eighth Route Army arrived.
