During the Long March, the Red Army's vanguard broke away from the strong enemy pursuing them. Led by Commander Zhang (played by Li Jiufang) and Political Commissar Qin (played by Zhou Zhengyu), they arrived at the southern bank of the Wu River, known since ancient times as a "natural fortress." Huangjia Village by the river had been ravaged by the enemy, with all houses reduced to rubble and livestock plundered. Only a few smoke-emitting broken wooden boats remained by the river. The troops organized to rescue people and put out fires while sending small squads to scout the enemy's situation, waiting for an opportunity to cross the Wu River. The enemy brigade commander (played by Xing Jitian) on the northern bank received a telegraph order to defend the Wu River at all costs. He ordered his subordinates to form a death squad, promising rewards of opium to resist the Red Army's attack.
