In 1949, our People's Liberation Army responded to Chairman Mao's call to "cross the Yangtze and liberate all of China." They sharpened their weapons and prepared to cross the Yangtze River. Before the army crossed the river, Captain Li (played by Sun Daolin) was dispatched to lead a reconnaissance team to gather information on the enemy's river defenses. After receiving the orders, he quickly crossed the river with members Wu Laogui (played by Qi Heng), Zhou Changxi (played by Kang Tai), Yang Wei (played by Zhong Shuhuang), and Xiao Ma (played by Sun Yongping), and made contact with the guerrilla leader Liu Sijie (played by Li Lingjun). They blended in with the local people repairing defenses along the river, and by employing a little trick, obtained a map of the river defenses and reported it to their superiors. Soon, they learned that the enemy had added a new artillery regiment, so they disguised themselves as enemy engineers and infiltrated the enemy's artillery positions, successfully completing their reconnaissance mission. On the way back, Zhou Changxi sacrificed himself heroically to cover his comrades. The repeated leaks of military secrets infuriated the enemy commander (played by Cui Chaoming), who ordered artillery strikes on our guerrilla base; just as they were communicating with their superiors, their radio was hit by enemy artillery fire.
