In the autumn of 1943 during the War of Resistance Against Japan, guerrilla leader Li Xiangyang (Guo Zhenqing) received the task of distracting the Japanese troops stationed in a certain county town, led by Matsui, in order to thwart their plot to "sweep" a base in North China and protect the food hidden in Lizhuang. During the operation, Li Xiangyang divided his forces with the chief of staff to proceed on two fronts. Li Xiangyang was seen moving the food by the landlord Yang Laozong, who hurried to the county town to inform Matsui (Fanghua). Matsui was delighted upon hearing this and led a large force to Lizhuang, but the food and villagers had already been arranged by Li Xiangyang to be moved to the tunnel, which Matsui eventually discovered. To lure Matsui away from Lizhuang, Li Xiangyang led his team into the county town, blew up a Japanese ammunition train, and planned to catch Matsui off guard during his retreat. However, Li Xiangyang underestimated Matsui's cunning, as Matsui made a "return fire" maneuver and turned back to Lizhuang, brutally killing some villagers who refused to reveal the food's hiding place. Yet, in the end, Li Xiangyang's mysterious appearances managed to outmaneuver Matsui.
