In the autumn of 1947 in northern Shaanxi, on a foggy morning, at the entrance of the Qingstone Mound village by the Li River, grandpa and grandma bid farewell to their last son and daughter-in-law who were evacuating, and silently returned to their prosperous home with their grandson and dog. To avoid the disturbances of Hu Zongnan's army, the entire village evacuated, but grandpa couldn't leave his cave dwelling and land. He had his own philosophy of life, believing he could "dig day and night in the yellow earth with his own hands," not relying on the Red Army or the Kuomintang, so what was there to fear? Just as grandpa watched his grandson playing with the dog, an efficient enemy unit entered the village and set up camp in grandpa's yard. As soon as the officer from the radio team entered, he shot and killed grandpa's dog, the haunting gunfire echoing in grandpa's heart. This was a unit carrying out a special mission, delving into the heartland to search for traces of our Central Committee in transition. Among this unit was an old horseman leading his pitiful son, and two young female soldiers, whom grandpa observed silently. In the clover field, grandpa learned about the old horseman's background and felt sympathy for him. The soldiers generally despised the war. A messenger and an attractive female soldier from an orphan background were secretly in love, scheming to escape, but their plan was discovered by the officer. To set an example, the officer subjected them to torture, and the messenger, unable to endure the humiliation, charged at the officer and was shot dead. Grandpa was shocked by all this. By the Li River, the attractive female soldier pleaded with the old horseman to help her escape, and the old horseman thought of grandpa. In the river god's temple, the old horseman asked grandpa to inform the guerrilla group about this signal unit; he knew well that only if his son became a prisoner of the Eighth Route Army would he and the attractive female soldier be saved, but unexpectedly, grandpa seemed indifferent and ran away. Grandpa ran to the clover field to report to the guerrilla group's big beard; he couldn't reveal his plans in advance! The guerrilla group surrounded the small yard, taking out a few sentries before the gunfire erupted. The officer resisted stubbornly, attempting to blow up the machine, but he couldn't approach the cave dwelling sealed by gunfire. He rushed into the grass shed, forcing the old horseman to charge out; in order to protect his only son, the old horseman died in the hail of bullets. To save the officer, the round-faced female soldier pressured the attractive female soldier to run out and distract the guerrilla group’s fire. After learning of the messenger’s death, the attractive female soldier went insane and was shot dead by the officer. The officer rushed into grandpa's cave, and grandpa knocked him down with a door brace! The battle ended, and grandpa buried the bodies of the old horseman and the attractive female soldier, silently sending his only son to join the army to greet the dawn of the new China! The film does not reflect the war from a straightforward perspective; instead, it captures a small farmhouse courtyard, a trivial battle. It portrays grandpa as simple, hardworking, and humble, while also showing his stubbornness, obstinacy, ignorance, and rusticity. He is a hero of an ordinary person, an ordinary person who is a hero. Even for the officer on the other side, the film depicts him as an ordinary person, avoiding stereotypical images. The creation attempts to measure the psychological impact of the war on everyone, allowing each character to involuntarily perform in vivid detail.
