The story takes place in Budapest in 1936. The coffin of the Hungarian Prime Minister has been transported back from Germany, and his dream of turning Hungary into a fascist state is buried with him. However, journalist Zsigmond Gordon, who investigates criminals, has other things on his mind. A clue leads him to a crime scene in a rundown part of the city, where a beautiful, well-dressed young woman has been murdered, found only with a Jewish prayer book... To investigate the murder, Gordon enters a world filled with erotic writers, brothels, and communist jails, all connected to those in power. The more people try to scare him away, the deeper he digs. As he investigates, he doesn't know who to trust or what forces are working against him to cover up the truth.
