During World War II, in Poland under German occupation, plumber Poredek (played by Robert Wieckiewicz) and his partner Zapek engage in petty thievery, with the complex sewer system becoming their best hiding place and storage room. He conducts business with the enclosed Jewish district and has a prior acquaintance with a Ukrainian officer in the German army, enjoying a bit of freedom in chaotic times. Soon, the Germans start the slaughter and capture of Jews. Some Jews, unwilling to be taken to concentration camps, strike a deal with Poredek, paying per head for the opportunity to hide in the sewers. The dark and foul-smelling sewers become a refuge for Poredek to shelter Jews, while those above ground are quickly rounded up. Under the pressure of skyrocketing prices and continuous oppression from the Germans, Zapek abandons him, and Poredek struggles alone to maintain the safety of the Jews in the sewers...
