"Dreamers on the Rice Waves" is a 60-minute documentary. The story begins with a grain of rice. Liang Zhengxian, the son of a rice mill in Chishang, Taitung, doesn’t look like a grain merchant to outsiders. Twenty years ago, to promote organic rice cultivation, he lost 4 million annually for 8 consecutive years; then, for a mere 3 by 5 cm origin label, he woke up every day ready to fight, bravely resisting the vast interests to obtain Taiwan's first exclusive rice identity certificate. Over 20 years, Chishang has produced several championship rice farmers, and the price of Chishang rice has risen to the highest in Taiwan, significantly transforming the lives of farmers. Later, the annual autumn harvest arts festival has brought Chishang, located in the southeast corner of Taiwan, into international journals, attracting tourists and transforming it into a different kind of rural area. The beauty of Chishang is not only the Heaven Road and the Chi Cheng Wu tree but also the hundreds of hectares of rice fields untouched by human construction, nurturing deep generational bonds between land and people, and among the people themselves. The documentary team spent two and a half years immersing themselves in farmers' lives, documenting the journey of different generations cultivating organic rice, as well as the four seasonal landscapes of Chishang. From transplanting seedlings, growth, ear formation to harvesting, it silently illustrates the transformation and development of Chishang, shifting from rice cultivation to artistic roots, creating a new dream home.
