This film describes the colorful life of Japanese ukiyo-e master Katsushika Hokusai. Tetsuzō (played by Ken Ogata), born into poverty, becomes the adopted son of the mirror maker Nakajima Issei (played by Franky Sakai) in his youth. He later becomes enamored with painting and learns art, but is expelled by several masters. After a falling out with his adoptive father, he and his daughter Aoe (played by Yūko Tanaka) take refuge in the home of his friend Sashichi (played by Toshiyuki Nishida), a samurai-turned-writer. In the rain, Tetsuzō encounters the mysterious beauty Anazuki (played by Kanako Higuchi) and falls in love, becoming infatuated with erotic paintings that gain immense popularity. His adoptive father, obsessed with Anazuki, commits suicide. Anazuki also leaves without a word, and Tetsuzō's life falls into despair. In this difficult time, Aoe and Sashichi (who later becomes the literary giant Ryūzaburō Matsumoto) help Tetsuzō through hardships. Tetsuzō travels widely and creates masterpieces such as "Thirty-Six Views of Mt. Fuji." Aoe marries Sashichi when she turns seventy, who is eighty-two at the time. Alone, Tetsuzō goes blind but still manages to create his final masterpiece - "The Real Path of Kinokai."
