The film company "Nikkatsu" has been in operation for a century, and one of its most iconic brands is the "Pink Film" (known in Japanese as Roman Porno, and called Pink Movie overseas), which was popular in the 1970s and 1980s, representing romanticized adult films. This year marks the 45th anniversary of the birth of "Pink Film." "Nikkatsu" has specially planned the "Roman Porno Reboot" project, inviting renowned directors Shin’ichirō Ueda, Hiroshi Kurosaki, Hideo Nakata, Akihiko Shiota, and Sion Sono to each direct a Pink Film. The five directors must adhere to traditional rules: there should be a sex scene every ten minutes, the runtime must be between 70 to 80 minutes, production costs must be kept very low, and filming must be completed within a week—everything else is open to creative expression. The results proved that the five directors not only enjoyed the process but excelled at it. Saltida's "Wet Woman" was the first to be revealed, reinterpreting the classic "Wet Lovers," depicting a wild girl intentionally getting wet on the beach and then, for a low price, selling herself to passing men. Shiraishi's "Femmes Fatales" similarly pays tribute to the classic "Femmes Fatales Night," relocating the new version to the streets of Ikebukuro, featuring the sexual escapades of refugees, single mothers, and infertile wives who roam at night after hanging out in internet cafes. Hiroshi Kurosaki's "Frisky Naked Dance" is an original story about a comedian who, while acting as a closed-minded director, falls into a trap of female seduction, leading to disgrace. Hideo Nakata, known for "The Ring," makes his debut in the adult world, successfully convincing the '90s actress Rin Asuka to perform fully naked in a lesbian story titled "White Lily." The always unconventional Sion Sono showcases his rebellious nature, using a provocative approach to create "Antiporno," where former AKB member Mami Tamura stars in her first full nude performance. The reason "Pink Film" has remained renowned for decades is because it adheres to principles of "eroticism," with low costs but solid scripts, serving as a testing ground for young directors to hone their skills. Major directors who have emerged from the Pink Film industry include Oscar-winning director Yojiro Takita of "The Last Hooper," Masaki Suo of "Shall We Dance?", Shusuke Kaneko of "Death Note," and the late director Yoshimitsu Morita of "After Paradise," all of whom started their careers with Pink Films. After a break of 28 years, the Pink series is now releasing five films at once, which is highly significant, and they will be released in Japan starting at the end of November.
