A play by British playwright, film and theatre director Mike Leigh, first performed in 1977. The BBC adapted it for the screen the same year, receiving a tremendous response. Beverly invites her new neighbors Angela and Tony over for an evening. Also invited is Sue, who lives nearby, because Sue's 15-year-old daughter Abigail is hosting her own party at their home. Beverly's husband Lawrence is busy with work; at the start of the play, he has just returned home from a late shift, and soon after, the guests arrive. The party begins in a rather awkward and reserved atmosphere.
