The story takes place in an ancient town of Jiangnan at the beginning of the War of Resistance, when the Japanese invaders had already occupied North China and were advancing south. At the behest of her parents and through a matchmaker, the young woman Yulian (played by Shen Qiuyu) marries into the Yin family. On the very day of her wedding, her groom, Yin Mingxuan, whom she has never met, flees to join the anti-Japanese guerrilla army. The Yin family loses face, and in a desperate move, they decide to have Mingxuan's younger brother Minghao (played by Shen Tao) stand in for his brother at the wedding, temporarily covering up the situation. As the war progresses, the flames of battle soon engulf Jiangnan, and the marriage between Minghao and Yulian faces cruel trials, much like the turbulent times. Tragedy strikes when Mingxuan is killed in action, plunging the family into sorrow. After mourning, the hearts of Minghao and Yulian gradually draw closer together. The relentless war sweeps through the small town, and determined to avenge his brother, Minghao bids farewell to his beloved Yulian and plunges into the torrent of the national liberation war...
