At 13, Theo Decker visits the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York with his mother when a terrorist bombing occurs, resulting in her death while he miraculously survives. This tragedy alters Theo's fate, and he grows up grappling with grief and guilt, resilience and redemption. However, no one knows that Theo secretly keeps a memento from that event, which is his only solace in remembering his mother—a painting of a small bird chained up—the world-famous artwork "The Goldfinch," which everyone believed was lost in the explosion at the museum.
