Henry (played by Mickey Rourke) is an obscure writer whose prolonged struggle for fame drives him to spend all his nights in bars. His favorite companion is a waitress named Wanda (played by Faye Dunaway), whose beauty and passion deeply attract him, even though Henry knows about the ambiguous relationship between Wanda and the bartender Eddie (played by Frank Stallone). Despite this knowledge, he cannot give up his feelings for Wanda. In a chance encounter, Henry meets Tully (played by Alice Krige), an art investor who immediately recognizes Henry's talent. Henry sees Tully as a stepping stone to success, but as time passes, he realizes he can't fit into Tully's social class.
