The film is based on a true story about Florence Foster Jenkins, a soprano singer in early 20th century America, who gained the audience's affection for her terrible singing skills and exceptional talent for entertainment. As a patron of the Verdi Club, Florence usually sang only for her members, and her performances were met with unanimous praise from the audience. Cosmé McMoon applied to be Florence’s piano accompanist but discovered during her vocal exercises that she sang off-key. McMoon felt this would tarnish his reputation, but under the persuasion of Florence's husband, St. Clair Bayfield, he decided to stay. After vocal practice, Florence grew more confident, recording records and holding solo concerts, eventually deciding to hold a performance at Carnegie Hall. Backstage, nervous upon seeing numerous celebrities in attendance, Florence took the stage with encouragement from Bayfield and McMoon, but her singing left the audience in shock. At that moment, Mrs. Stark, who had once mocked Florence, stepped forward to cheer for her heartfelt performance. The next day, the New York Post published a negative review of Florence's singing, which Florence learned about accidentally. She felt incredibly disheartened and, in a daze, found herself back at Carnegie Hall where her voice was beautiful and melodic as she slowly closed her eyes.
