Andrew (Tom Hanks) and Miller (Denzel Washington) meet in court, both are young and talented lawyers working for their respective clients. However, young Andrew is soon discovered to be gay and HIV-positive by his boss and is fired on unfounded allegations. After being fired, Andrew seeks out lawyers to help him seek justice. When Andrew finds Miller, Miller initially refuses him. Like many, Miller harbors disdain for homosexuality and fears HIV, but when he sees Andrew being glared at by the librarian while searching for "AIDS discrimination" and listens to his wife slowly and calmly discussing how many of their aunt's friends are gay, he decides to take Andrew's case. In the final court appearance, the ailing Andrew resolutely shows up in court…
