The story idea comes from the film's lead actor, comedian Nick Kroll, telling the tale of a young, narcissistic entrepreneur (played by Kroll) whose company suddenly collapses on the eve of a major breakthrough. As his life descends into chaos, he is forced to leave Manhattan and move to the suburbs to live with his estranged sister, her husband—played by real-life couple Rose Byrne and Bobby Cannavale—and his 3-year-old nephew. Through caring for his young nephew, he begins to discover the meaning of life and how to start over as an adult.
