"The Loved Ones" is set in Paris, London, and Prague, and the story is divided into two parts. The first part takes place in the 1960s, the golden age of sexual liberation and women's rights, where a Parisian woman, Madeleine, arrives in Prague with her newlywed husband, Jaromir. However, the arrival of Soviet tanks in the city forces their separation. The second part occurs thirty years later in the 1990s, a time when people are experiencing the horrors of AIDS, and the fear of commitment is seen as a societal illness. Madeleine's daughter, Vera, meets Henderson in London, who believes he is incapable of love.
