Chen Wei (played by Ren Dahua), originally a detective in the major crimes unit, has a remarkable record and shares a deep love with his wife (played by Yu Li). Just as he is about to be promoted, he unfortunately loses a close comrade in the "AK47" case, which leaves him with overwhelming guilt, trapped in terrifying memories. This leads him to suffer from psychological disorders, and he is misunderstood by his wife as having taken a new lover, resulting in their divorce. As Chen Wei faces disappointment in love, he is demoted to a post on an outlying island. Coincidentally, his wife is brutally assaulted by criminals while trying to save her sister, and Wei witnesses everything, leaving him heartbroken. He finally overcomes his psychological struggles and decides to engage in a life-and-death battle against inhumans. Meanwhile, Zhang Heng (played by Huang Guangliang), a former soldier in the Vietnam War, currently resides as a fisherman in mainland China, content with his life. Due to work, he frequently travels in and out of Hong Kong's outlying islands. He has a kind personality, understands social laws and principles, but unfortunately faces discrimination from a group of residents living in a civilized society who unjustly abuse him. His wife is gang-raped and killed by them. Zhang Heng struggles back to life on the edge of death, retreating to the mainland, and partners with three heartless comrades to return to the outlying island for revenge. However, they have been transformed into ruthless killers by the ravages of war, beyond Zhang Heng's control, leading to a tragic massacre instead of revenge. Zhang Heng's regret comes too late as a nightmare unfolds. On the other hand, contemporary youths like Li Mei (played by Wu Miaoyi) and Pao Wang (played by He Peidong) often adopt a cynical attitude towards social responsibility and human standards. After experiencing a catastrophic incident involving humans and beasts, they come to a profound understanding of the fragility and horror of human nature.
