Two retired Army officers unexpectedly discover a police badge and a skull in a desert area in South Texas. This leads the local police officer, Sam Dees, to investigate the circumstances surrounding these discoveries. During his preliminary investigation, Sam visits a bar and learns some past events from the bar owner, including details about Sam's father, Bowdie Dees, and a notorious sheriff. The bar owner had once been forced by this unscrupulous sheriff but was helpless to resist. Thus begins a series of old stories and new discoveries...
