About three hundred years ago, in the 15th year of Genroku (1702), the fifth shogun Tsunayoshi implemented a peaceful policy, and the people's lives were stable. The young samurai Aoki Sozaemon (played by Junichi Okada) left his hometown to find his father's murderer, Kanazawa Jubei (played by Tadanobu Asano), coming from Shinshu to Edo. However, his swordsmanship was poor, and he was, in fact, incapable of achieving revenge. Sozaemon took refuge in a dilapidated hut and opened a small private school to make a living, developing feelings for the beautiful widow Sae (played by Rie Miyazawa), who lived across from him. Later, Sozaemon found Kanazawa, but the enemy had laid down his sword and was living a normal life with his wife and children, prompting Sozaemon to ponder what revenge truly meant. Meanwhile, the samurai of the Ako domain were lurking in this area, waiting for the opportunity to avenge their lord who had died unjustly. What will be the outcome for those who seek revenge?
