In the chaotic times of the Qing Dynasty, Zhang Wenxiang (played by Jiang David), Huang Zong (played by Chan Kwan Tai), and Ma Xinyi (played by Di Lung) become sworn brothers after a chance encounter. Ma Xinyi is appointed as the eldest brother, with Zhang Wenxiang taking the role of the third brother. Ma Xinyi's ambitious nature attracts the admiration of Huang Zong's wife, Milan (played by Ching Li), but due to his aspirations and moral constraints, Ma Xinyi does not accept Milan's love. After being promoted to Governor of Liangjiang, Ma Xinyi becomes ruthless in achieving his goals, ultimately possessing Milan after his moral and emotional defenses break down, while also orchestrating the death of the reckless Huang Zong, who is devoted to him. After discovering the true cause of his second brother's death, Zhang Wenxiang changes his usual carefree demeanor and solemnly confronts Ma Xinyi, who sacrificed a good brother for a woman.
