In early winter of 1939, to implement the top-secret "Centipede" plan, the Japanese army occupied the city of Wuji at the junction of Shanxi, Chahar, and Hebei, and conducted a thorough sweep of the anti-Japanese armed forces in the area. Tie Bao, a young man from Daliuzhuang, was forced by livelihood to take the village's young men to the battlefield to scavenge for fallen equipment, but unexpectedly, the wealthy landlord's daughter, Wang Yucui, got involved, and Tie Bao and others clashed with the Japanese army. Due to a lost Czech-made machine gun, Zhang Xifeng, the captain of the Eighth Route Army's work team, got entangled with Tie Bao. Tie Bao found himself in a dilemma as he was pursued by two women. Wang Yucui, who has loved Tie Bao since childhood, vowed to marry him, but Tie Bao repeatedly rejected her. In a fit of anger, Wang Yucui decided to marry her childhood friend, He Jinnan, the leader of the militia, who had always pursued her. However, during the wedding, He Jinnan was captured by the Japanese army. To protect Wang Yucui's life, He Jinnan became a traitor and led the Japanese army to slaughter 116 people in Daliuzhuang. National hatred and family feuds forced Tie Bao and others onto the path of resisting Japan. Seizing the opportunity, Zhang Xifeng persuaded Tie Bao to join the work team, but Tie Bao showed no interest and secretly undermined the team. Wang Yucui was very dissatisfied with Zhang Xifeng's constant pursuit of Tie Bao and publicly declared herself to be Tie Bao's wife. Wang Yucui pressured Tie Bao to marry her, to which Tie Bao said he would only consider marriage after killing 116 Japanese soldiers. In order to help fulfill his daughter's wish, Wang Yucui's father, Wang Shucai, decided to reward those who killed Japanese soldiers, resulting in a flurry of gunfire in the city. Tie Bao's beloved younger brother, Shitou, died as a result. Devastated, Tie Bao finally recognized the shortcomings of his team and officially joined Zhang Xifeng's work team. As the Japanese army continued to massacre villages, everyone realized they had an ulterior motive. Tie Bao pretended to surrender to the Japanese to gather intelligence but obtained nothing. Wangjiacun was slaughtered, and the entire village disappeared, but Wang Shucai was accused of being a "traitor." Wang Yucui sought help from He Jinnan to find her father, but the traitor Tang Jinshi from the work team informed the Japanese and led them to capture Wang Yucui. In a desperate moment, Wang Yucui declared she was there to marry He Jinnan. The Japanese decided to use their wedding as a trap to capture Tie Bao. He Jinnan was killed by Tang Jinshi while trying to protect Wang Yucui, and in his last moments, he told her that the Japanese were building a secret granary. Through continuous investigation by Tie Bao and others, the Japanese "Centipede" plan gradually came to light. The Japanese aimed to establish a large telephone communications base in Wuji, responsible for all military communications in North China. The missing villagers had been captured to work as laborers digging tunnels for the cable installation. Wang Yucui discovered the Japanese secret but was captured by Tang Jinshi while trying to retreat. Tie Bao ventured into the tiger's den and, with the help of Zhang Xifeng and others, rescued Wang Yucui. Higher authorities dispatched main forces to destroy the Japanese communications base. Zhang Xifeng volunteered to join the troops heading to the front and heroically sacrificed herself. Tie Bao was heartbroken, bid farewell to his fiancée Wang Yucui, and requested to fight again. Tie Bao and the military district commander devised a plan: the main forces would feign an attack while he led the remaining brothers to secretly infiltrate the communications base through tunnels. With a loud explosion, the entire base and the Japanese troops on the surface were engulfed in flames, completely destroying the "Centipede" plan. Source: http://www.yingshimo.com
