In a rural area of North China, tenant farmer Yang Bailao (Zhang Shouwéi) has a daughter, Xi'er (Tian Hua), who is in love with young Wang Dachun (Li Baiwan). Landlord Huang Shirun (Chen Qiang) has an eye on Xi'er and sets a trap, forcing Yang Bailao to repay the six dou of millet he owes him with both principal and interest before the New Year. Yang Bailao brings seven dollars and fifty cents, the hard-earned money from a winter's labor, to the Huang family to repay the interest, but is pressured to repay the full amount or have Xi'er serve as payment. He is coerced into placing his thumbprint on his daughter's contract of sale. On New Year's Eve, Yang Bailao, filled with grief, commits suicide by drinking brine. On the first day of the New Year, a sorrowful Xi'er is abducted into the Huang family and soon becomes the victim of Huang Shirun's lust. Dachun collaborates with Aunt Zhang Er (Guan Linpu) to rescue Xi'er but is discovered, forcing him to flee and join the Red Army. Later, Aunt Er helps Xi'er escape from the Huang family again, hiding her in the deep mountains and forests, where Xi'er survives by scavenging offerings from the grandmother's temple and eating wild fruits. The inhumane living conditions cause Xi'er's hair to gradually turn completely white. Villagers see her and spread rumors that she is the white-haired goddess who collects offerings. Eventually, Dachun returns home with his troops to launch a rent and interest reduction campaign. Huang Shirun attempts to sway public sentiment using the legend of the white-haired goddess. To thwart the landlord's plot, Dachun leads the villagers to lie in wait at the grandmother's temple at night, searching for the white-haired goddess...
