Harris (Michael Redgrave) is a professor of classical literature, refined and charismatic, who has dedicated his life to diligent work and integrity. However, one day he is unexpectedly dismissed, euphemistically referred to as "early retirement," and his students seem completely indifferent to the situation. Meanwhile, Harris realizes that the classical literature he has devoted his life to studying has become worthless, and he has turned into an obsolete relic. The situation worsens; Harris thought he had a good relationship with his wife, Millie (Jean Kent), but in reality, Millie has been secretly involved with a chemistry teacher for quite some time, and Harris is completely unaware of it. As he reaches his twilight years, Harris gradually loses faith and hope in life. At this moment, one of his former students gifts him a translation of "Agamemnon" by Browning, and this book helps Harris rediscover his courage and self-identity.
