Priya (played by Shriya Saran) is a native Indian girl raised in a rigid and conservative typical Indian family, working a mundane job as a call center operator for a credit card company. As an Indian girl, the liberal and diverse lifestyle of America holds a deadly attraction for Priya; she not only masters fluent and standard English but also fabricates a false identity, telling every customer who calls her that she is Jennifer from San Francisco. In a chance encounter, Priya receives a call from a man named Granger (played by Jesse Metcalfe), and they hit it off, even agreeing to meet. To maintain her lie, Priya boards a plane to America. Priya's departure infuriates her father, Raymond (played by Anupam Kher), who has already arranged a suitable husband for her in India. In order to bring back his rebellious daughter, Raymond's whole family even sets foot on American soil.
