Adapted from the novel by British writer J.R. Ackerley, it tells the story of his later years intertwined with the joys and sorrows of a new shepherd dog. The dog is sometimes neurotic and sometimes reveals its canine nature; their relationship is somewhat like that of lovers and somewhat like that of a father and daughter, detailed and warm. Roger Ebert awarded this film a perfect score once again.
